FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about the Movie Theater Church:

1.  Why are you called the Movie Theater Church if you don't meet in a movie theater?
We get asked this one a lot.  When we began our minstry, we did meet in a movie theater.  We met at the Movies 8 Cinema on East Washington for about a year and a half.  In October of 2009, we made the decision to move to a location that would allow for additional growth within worship and children's ministries, as well as house our offices during the week.  We decided not to change the name because of the presence we already had on the east side of Indianapolis, but still maintain a movie-theater-like enviornment with big screens, popcorn, and movie clips.

2.  What are your worship services like?
We believe you’ll find the Movie Theater Church to be an incredibly welcoming and creative environment, each week an unpredictable adventure into the heartbeat of God. We’re not here to entertain you or just help you check the church attendance obligation off your weekly to-do list. Our services will be full of imagination, creativity, great music, and real challenges for real life. At MTC you’ll find a place that accepts you for who you are, but challenges you to become all God created you to be.  By the way, we also serve popcorn and view movie clips that allow the scripture to be made into real life situations.

3.  What time should I arrive to worship?
At MTC, worship is more than spending an hour together on Sunday mornings.  It's the relationships we build, the prayers we pray, and the way we live our lives outside of that hour of service once a week.  On Sunday mornings, we encourage everyone to arrive around 9:30am, grab a snack, and enjoy a good conversation in a solid time of fellowship.  Worship begins at 10:00am.  Following the service, feel free to stick around, join the pastor in prayer, listen to the Deeper Roots jam, or simply go to lunch with church friends.

4.  What should I wear when attending worship?
Clothes.  Please, wear some clothes.  But seriously, that is the only requirement.  There will never be a dress code at MTC.  We want you to come as you are and wear whatever you're comfortable in.

5.  What about my children or youth?
The MTC nursery is available for ages 0-2, and is located in the lobby of the Community Life Center at the far end of the lobby.  Every Sunday, MTC offers "Kids-4-Christ" classes for children 5th grade and younger during worship over in the MTC Studios.  These classes provide a solid Christian message on their level through stories, crafts, and games.  MTC youth, called EDGE, meet every Sunday evening from 6:00-7:30pm.  EDGE is for 6th grade through high school.

6.  How can I connect with others outside of worship?
The best way to interact with others between worship services is through our small groups offerings.  There are multiple opportunities for anyone to join a small group of friends and peers for fellowship, prayer, study, devotion, and accountability.  Please let Pastor Ethan know if you need help finding a group that is just right for you.  Besides small groups, you can interact by volunteering or partaking in online discussions.  Feel free to visit the Interact page fr more information.

7.  Are you affilliated with any denomination?
The Movie Theater Church is a United Methodist congregation, part of the Central District within the Indiana Conference of United Methodist churches.  We were originally birthed by Old bethel United Methodist Church, a church with historic ties to the east side of Indianapolis, striving in traditional worship.  Trust us, though, you will not find a pipe organ, United Methodist hymnal, or permanent nametags anywhere during our worship services.  We strive to change the way people view the United Methodist church by "Re-Thinking Church."  This just simply means doing things a little different; re-thinking how church should be.

8.  Do you have plans for a permanent building?
At MTC, we believe the church is the people, not the facility.  Renting a facility for worship not only allows us to focus our mission and ministry on interacting with people on the far eastside of Indianapolis, but it also serves as a constant reminder that we don’t go to church, we are the church.  With that being said, our long-term vision doees include the possibility of purchasing a permanent building, such as an old movie theater.  We envision a place that is open to the public during the week, where parents and children and come interact in a positive, uplifting enviornment, and people can learn about the power of Christ through us on a daily basis.

9.  Will I be asked to give money to MTC?
Absolutely not.  In fact, we encourage first time visitors not to donate to MTC, but just allow us the opportunity to lead you in worship.  We do collect an offering during worship, that supports the mission and vision of MTC.  However, we will never ask or pressure you to give money to the church until you are ready to accept the responsibility of supporting a ministry like MTC.
